A recent Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits survey to gauge the need among nonprofit agencies statewide for personal protective equipment shows that 49.9% have no disinfectant sprays or wipes and just over 25% have no access to thermometers.
More than half of respondents serve elderly communities, which are known to be at higher risk of more serious COVID-19 complications.
Most respondents indicate they need face shields and disposable masks, but they have enough reusable masks, hand soap and hand sanitizer. Bleach, gowns and HEPA air filters are among much-needed items, according to the poll, along with rapid testing for workers.
Cost and availability are the most cited obstacles for organizations trying to obtain most of their needed items.
All respondents indicated that their organization would need more than 125 disposable masks, reusable masks, gloves, disinfectant wipes, disinfectant sprays and thermometers to use through the end of 2020.
Nearly 75% of respondents serve Maricopa and Pima counties, and 22.38% of respondents serve the entire state of Arizona.
“As nonprofit organizations push forward on their respective missions to provide critical services and resources to communities all over the state at a time of unprecedented challenges, they are doing all they can to ensure the protection, health and safety of their staff and volunteers,” said Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits Chief Executive Officer Kristen Merrifield. “It is vital that we, as citizens of Arizona and residents of those communities, support them either through donations of money or, if possible, the PPE many of them so desperately need.”
The Alliance conducted the survey last month in partnership with Arizona Grantmakers Forum after Arizona Grantmakers members requested the information during weekly member videoconferences focused on philanthropy’s response to COVID-19 in Arizona.
If your organization has PPE to donate or is able to provide funding to nonprofits to procure their own PPE, please contact Arizona Grantmakers Forum President & CEO Laurie Liles.
