Next year, Phoenix has the opportunity to be the host city for the annual Communities Summit for GivingTuesday, a global generosity movement designed to unleash the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. We invite you to join us on for an Arizona Grantmakers Forum meeting co-hosted with The Lodestar Foundation to learn about plans for the 2021 summit and share your ideas.

BACKGROUND

Modeled after the post-Thanksgiving consumer days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, GivingTuesday was created to inspire all sectors of society in communities around the world to support nonprofits on one dedicated day leading into the holiday season, the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. The Lodestar Foundation provided a lead grant to launch the project, and additional grants provided funding to support ongoing operations of the initiative. GivingTuesday’s Communities Summit is an annual gathering, bringing together its core team and community leaders from across the country to focus on network-building, knowledge-sharing, new initiatives and co-creation. Its leaders help curate and facilitate conversations around topics that can inspire other to adopt practices leading to additional impact at scale.

Last year, GivingTuesday hosted over 120 leaders in Charlotte, North Carolina, home of one of its longest-running campaigns. They represented leaders from Hawaii, Katy, Texas, and Brooklyn, New York, as well as cause-based coalitions such as the Campaign for Black Male Achievement and LatinosGive. Among the topics covered during the 2.5-day summit were building effective coalitions, engaging communities of color and mobilizing young people for change.

For the first time in 2021, GivingTuesday will open the summit up to leaders in countries outside of the United States. This will be a leap forward for the summit, bringing an international lens to the leadership of communities connected to GivingTuesday.
